Fall Favorite Book Recommendations
I’m back with some great autumn kindergarten and preschool book recommendations. I know that I always appreciate having someone recommend books that they love, and I know students love to discover seasonal books that are new to them!

Recently I needed to put together a baby gift for a couple who has a new baby. Because they live far away and making them a meal wasn’t an option (that’s my favorite new parent gift!), we went with a Door Dash gift card, but I wanted to add a little something special too. I am a huge fan of a cozy stuffed animal, so after ordering a classic teddy (I was between Steiff and Jellycat brands, do you have a favorite?) I decided to pair it with one of my all-time favorite kindergarten read aloud books, Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson. They make a board book version, how perfect!

This inspired me for my latest blog post, because I was so excited to share this favorite book with them, that I wanted to share more favorite fall books with my readers! The following are a few fall books to consider reading aloud to your preschool or kindergarten learners, at home or at school. If I have a book companion created, I’ll also add a link to it on my Teachers Pay Teachers store. I love to create mini book companions that offer writing and comprehension activities to some of my favorite books so that teachers can easily pair these materials with their read aloud.
The book: All of the classic Bears series by Karma Wilson… I know I have recommended these in past posts, too! They are that good. Especially Bear Says Thanks in the fall!
What makes them stand out: Repeating/repetitive texts are just always such a HIT with the early childhood crowd. I loved how passionate my students are when they would call out “but the BEAR SNORES ON!”, delighted to “read” the Bear Snores book along with me! You can’t go wrong with the Bears series. I would dedicate a whole bears week when I was teaching kindergarten, reading a new Bears book each day and pairing them with nonfiction bear texts.
Something to note: Board book versions are available for your younger readers! Also, this series has grown a lot and Karma Wilson even added a new book as recently as last winter (2024)!
The book: The Fall Festival by Mercer Mayer
What makes it stand out: First of all, who doesn’t love Little Critter and his antics! As a child (and let’s be honest, as an adult) I find great comfort in books and shows that have familiar characters. Lots of children love to recognize their favorite book characters over and over again in different books, and this is no exception. Little Critter and family pick apples and pumpkins, take a hayride, and participate in all the classic fall fun activities.

The book: Biscuit and the Great Fall Day by Alyssa Satin Capucilli
What makes it stand out: Biscuit and his girl have a blast at the apple orchard. A great book to pair with a field trip to an apple orchard, dramatic play about apple orchards, or really anytime during the fall. Biscuit the dog is another fan favorite character! Plus, this works well in a pets or animals unit.

The book: Just so Thankful by Mercer Mayer
What makes it stand out: Another Little Critter book, this time learning about gratitude. This book is a great book about thankfulness, and not the holiday of Thanksgiving. It can work well as an addition to your Thanksgiving unit, or anytime during the year to focus on cultivating gratitude for what we have.
